Katarina began ice-skating at age five. Her talent soon became obvious as she enrolled into a school specifically designed for children with a talent for sport in Karl-Marx-Stadt. In this school, she was introduced to her coach Jutta Muller. Witt made her mark in the second position she placed in the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. In the years since, Witt's grace and beauty have captivated the interest of all. Olympic success At the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt came through a closely battle to take home the women's figure skating gold medal. Four years later, the event, she was able to claim an additional intense race. The free skate she took was not a success, however the gold medal was awarded to her because of the performances she made during both compulsory figures (short programme) and the compulsory figures. Witt was the only woman since Sonja Haenie to be a repeat figure skating winner. Hall of Fame Witt had many successes as a performer, however, she returned to her sport in order to compete during her participation in the Lillehammer Winter Games of 1994. The team finished seventh, but she wowed the crowd despite not winning the medal. Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by its members in the year 1995.
